Wine Tourism

In the heart of the Western Cape Wine Route, Somerset West and the Helderberg are boasts some very fine wine touring opportunities including: the prestigious Vergelegen and Lourensford wine estates. Only 15 scenic minutes of driving takes you onto the famous Stellenbosch Wine Route where you can taste fine wines in spectacular surroundings.

Helderberg Basin

Somerset West, Gordons Bay and Strand make up the Helderberg Basin. There is a combination of action packed Mountains, warm Blue Ocean and white sandy beaches, making it one of the most sought after holiday destinations in the world.

The slopes of the mountains are covered in vineyards or botanical gardens. Whilst the Helderberg is a world of it's own, it is still only 30 minutes drive from the center of Cape Town, 20 minutes from the Cape Town International Airport and 15 minutes from the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

Over the Hottentot Holland mountain range that curtains the Helderberg basin is the world famous garden route and the town of Hermanus, famous for it's Whale watching is only 40 minutes drive from the Helderberg basin, this does not mean to say that we do not have the Whales gracing our shores, and they can sometimes be seen frolicking in the waves not 5 meters from the coast.

There are many nature reserves in the area. The most noteworthy being the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, the first proclaimed international biosphere in South Africa, only a half hour drive away, is in the heart of the Fynbos Kingdom with its 1600 fynbos species of which 150 are endemic!

20 minutes drive to Betty's Bay offers the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens which shows off the best of the fynbos kingdom, enjoyed on a relaxing stroll through the gardens or a hiking trail up the deep, forested valleys.

There is a range of easily accessible water sport facilities that can be accessed directly from the hotels and moorings. These includes jet skiing, rubber ducks, water skiing, to mention only a few...

Gordon's Bay is host to the aptly named Bikini Beach, a small beach just off the main road, and well protected from the infamous Cape wind. Kogel Bay or Cool Bay is just round the corner and offer a long stretch of white sandy beach, as well as some caves and rugged rock formations. Some of the best waves in the Cape for the surfing fanatics.
